There is something satisfying about Google’s playful adherence to alphabetically-ordered dessert names for its progressive Android iterations. Yesterday’s announcement (during the solar eclipse) was no exception. Say hello to the Android 8.0 “Oreo". The phone is billed as “smarter, faster, and more powerful than ever” by its Google developers.
The latest version of the Droid boasts a wealth of new features, including the following:
Picture-in-picture
Previously multitasking between apps has been a headache. For example, if you’ve ever wanted to Google something while looking at Instagram or check your calendar while on a video call, you’d have to exit one to open the other. Not so with picture-in-picture, which allows you to view two apps at once.
Autofill
Enhances usability of forms for efficient navigation and login (with permission).
Beefed up security
Google Play Protect is built into Android for the first time in Oreo, and the eye is immediately drawn to security features upon opening the settings menu. App download and installation is also more closely regulated.
Better battery
Oreo saves Droid users from themselves by reducing overuse of battery by background apps, which means a longer battery life, and a healthier battery.
Increased speed
Oreo boasts super-fast boot up capabilities (twice as fast as Pixel). The powerful operating system combines with Autofill and Android Instant Apps to get apps up and running without installation - and with you logged in.
Notification channels, dots, and badges
Android Oreo now allows users to long-click apps to quick-view and dismiss notifications without opening the app, or to access the app via that preview.
Enviable emojis
Emojis get a full makeover on the Oreo, and now include a devoted superhero collection.
Google has updated servers to open sourcing via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for public consumption. Pixel, Nexus 5x/6P, Pixel C, and Nexus Player, meanwhile, are undergoing carrier testing and will begin to roll out in phases before the endow the year.
