A Short Guide to Understanding the Difference Between ChatGPT and GPT-3

A Short Guide to Understanding the Difference Between ChatGPT and GPT-3

ChatGPT and GPT-3 are popular AI, and Machine Learning constructs that are being used across the web to great effect. They are also likely the face of AI devices since they have become the most well-known. However, many people are confused about the differences between the two and which one is right for their businesses. Here is a short guide to understanding the difference between ChatGPT and GPT-3

The Biggest Difference

ChatGPT and GPT-3 are connected but they are not the same thing. In simplest terms, one is an app, while the other is a framework.

ChatGPT is an app that is powered by GPT-3. Essentially, ChatGPT is the interface that people use to make GPT-3 do things. It makes it possible for anyone to use GPT-3 to do things, even if they can’t code.

GPT-3 is the AI framework that can be used to build apps and other tools, but it does not have an interface. To use it, you have to understand how to code with AI frameworks. This severely limits the number of people who can use the technology.

GPT-3 is More Powerful Now

Another thing to note about GPT-3 is that it is more powerful than it was when ChatGPT was developed. When ChatGPT was developed, the version of GPT-3 that powers it had 20 million parameters that it uses to make decisions. Parameters are the pieces of information that the program looks for and compares to make decisions. Having so many parameters gives it the ability to make very well-defined decisions. The more parameters that it has, the more human responses it can generate.

ChatGPT has continued to evolve and now has up to 128 million parameters. This makes it one of, if not the, most advanced AI frameworks in the world. The developer also announced the development of GPT-4, so GPT-3 has likely reached its maximum level of sophistication and may be integrated back into ChatGPT to give it a sizeable upgrade.

Same Capabilities, Different Focuses

Since ChatGPT is built on top of GPT-3, they have the same capabilities. They can do the exact same things as eachother. However, how you interact with each one is different and can change how you use each one.

ChatGPT is designed to be a chatbot and function like one. It answers questions by compiling answers from the data that it gathers. Its primary goal is to answer the questions and do the tasks that users give it. In short, it is a customer-focused tool.

GPT-3, being a framework, does not have an underlying focus. It can be used for a variety of tasks, but it doesn’t favor any of them by design. Not having this focus lets it work equally well for different tasks depending on what kind of interface you develop for it.

For example, there are companies developing GPT-3 apps for administrative work, where the interface is specifically designed to make automating tasks easier. It all depends on what you want to connect it to and how you want to make it work.

Which One Should You Choose?

The choice depends on your coding abilities and what you want to do. ChatGPT already has a wide range of capabilities, so incorporating it into your business may be a better choice than working directly with GPT-3. Alternatively, you can build custom tools with GPT-3, and open up a wide range of options based on what you need.

It’s All in How You Use It

While ChatGPT and GPT-3 are connected, they are not the same. Choosing the right one for your business all depends on how you use it. If you want to leverage GPT to do things but you don’t know how to code directly in an AI framework, then you need to work with ChatGPT. If you can code in a framework and you want to build a tool or interface product with it, then you can work directly with GPT-3.Building AI apps is a relatively new field that will take some time to develop skills and resources.
