AI crater detection for planetary surface dating
Dating a planetary surface means counting the craters on it. On Mars that meant researchers reviewing orbital imagery by hand, one region at a time, on a planet with a surface area the size of every continent on Earth combined.
Automated image analysis and AI models that detect craters in orbital imagery and characterize them for surface age classification. The models handle the conditions that break naive detection, including overlapping craters, erosion, and varied lighting across image sets, so classification holds up across regions rather than on curated samples.
